Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor C.J. from Chagrin River Chiropractic here in Mentor, Ohio, and today we’re talking about something that I genuinely believe is one of the most important health topics of our time. Posture. Now, I know what you might be thinking — posture? Really? That’s what my grandmother used to nag me about. But stick with me here, because in a world where most of us are spending eight, ten, sometimes twelve hours a day looking at screens, this conversation has never been more relevant.
Here’s the thing. The human body was designed to move. It was built for variety — standing, walking, bending, reaching. But what most of us are doing today is sitting in the same position, staring at a phone or a computer screen, for hours on end. And over time, that takes a real toll.
Let me paint you a picture. When your head is in a neutral position — sitting straight, eyes level — your head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds. That’s already a significant load for your neck and upper back to support. But here’s what’s interesting. For every inch your head tilts forward, the effective stress on your spine can increase dramatically. So if you’re hunched over your phone with your chin dropping toward your chest, the muscles and joints in your neck and upper back are working way harder than they should be. Day after day. Year after year.
We’ve actually started calling this tech neck in the chiropractic world. And I see it constantly in my practice. People come in with neck pain, upper back tightness, headaches — and when I ask them about their daily habits, almost every single time, we can connect it back to prolonged screen use and poor posture.
Now, here’s what I really want you to understand. Posture isn’t just about how you look. It’s about how your entire system functions. Your spine houses and protects your spinal cord, which is the main communication highway between your brain and the rest of your body. When your posture is consistently off — when there’s chronic stress and strain on those spinal structures — it can affect more than just how your back feels. It can influence your energy levels, your breathing, even your mood.
So what can you do starting today? A few simple things can make a real difference. First, think about your screen height. Whether it’s your computer monitor or your phone, try to bring the screen up to eye level rather than dropping your head down to meet it. This one change alone can take a significant amount of strain off your neck.
Second, set a reminder to move. Every thirty minutes or so, stand up, roll your shoulders back, take a few deep breaths. Give your spine a reset. Your body will thank you. And third — this one’s big — pay attention to how you feel. If you’re noticing tightness across your shoulders, tension headaches that seem to come on after long screen sessions, or that familiar ache in your upper or lower back, don’t just push through it. Those are signals worth listening to.
Now, here’s when I’d encourage you to come see us. If those symptoms are showing up regularly, if the tension feels like it just won’t let go no matter how much you stretch or rest, or if you’ve noticed your posture changing and you’re not sure how to address it on your own — that’s exactly what we’re here for. A chiropractic evaluation can help us identify where the stress is accumulating in your spine and put together a plan to address it. No guessing, no one-size-fits-all approach. Just a real look at what’s going on with your body.
Posture is one of those things that tends to sneak up on you. It doesn’t happen overnight. It builds gradually over months and years. And the good news is — it can also be improved gradually with the right guidance and consistency.
Thank you so much for spending a few minutes with me today. If you found this helpful, please share it with someone you know who’s glued to a screen — so, pretty much everyone, right?
